About Marulani
This bush-lovers paradise hosts a wide variety of bird and animal life including many antelope species (kudu, impala, nyala, klipspringer, wildebeest, bushbuck, waterbuck, red hartebeest) as well as zebra and giraffe. The reserve is also home to many of the smaller mammals which you would expect in a typical savanna/bushveld biome such as warthog, bushpig, porcupine, brown hyena and jackal to mention a few. A decision was made by shareholders to exclude large or dangerous animals in order for families and children to be able to jog, cycle and walk around the farm in safety. However a leopard has occasionally been spotted and we believe the farm has hosted a number of her litters over the years.

The reserve is managed by a board of directors and employs a fulltime farm manager, several labourers and a number of security rangers. Shareholders are charged monthly levies which go towards maintaining the farm’s roads, fencing, water reticulation, security, general upkeep and animal husbandry.

Shareholders utilise Marulani primarily as a holiday home or for weekend breaks as it is ideal for nature lovers who want to get away from the rat race without having to travel too far to do so. The common facilities include 2 dams, animal feeding areas, picnic areas, benches and lookout sites.

The area boasts an abundance of wildlife, including the Big Five, and many eco-tourism, adventure and other opportunities including golf courses, guided game drives, watersport, cheese farm, horse riding, spa facilities, craft beer, crocodile farm, rehabilitation/wildlife centres, ziplining, hiking trails, country restaurants and pubs.

Ecological Characteristics
The farm is in the Savanna Biome (wooded grasslands), the Central Bushveld Bioregion and the vegetation type is Waterberg Mountain Bushveld, including the foothills, escarpment and tablelands north of Bela Bela. Altitude about 1200 -1500 metres.

Vegetation and Landscape Features
Rugged mountains with vegetation grading from Faurea saligna-Protea caffra bushveld on higher slopes through broad-leaved deciduous bushveld (dominated by Diplorhynchus condylocarpon) on rocky mid- and footslopes to Burkea afrikana- Terminalia sericea savanna in the lower-lying valleys as well as on deeper sands of the plateaus. The grass layer is moderately developed or well developed.

Geology and Soils
Mainly sandstone, subordinate conglomerate, siltstone, shale and medium to coarse-grained sandstone, trachytic lava and quartz porphyry, acidic sandy, loamy to gravelly soil.

Climate: Summer rainfall with very dry winters. High summer temperatures up to 38 degrees Celsius average. MAP from about 500mm to about 750mm. Mild winter temperatures with 12-15 degrees Celsius averages. Frost fairly frequent in winter.

Vegetation
The name Marulani congers up the impression that there are many marula trees on the farm, however this is not so with only a few occuring . What makes Marulani unique is that we have natural bushveld in which only a small portion of the farm was debushed by previous owners. Many farms in the Bushveld were cleared for agricultural purposes and the trees removed. Bushveld trees normally don’t become very large, seldom growing taller than about 12 metres. Marulani shareholders can truly be proud of the tree heritage we enjoy with probably more than 100 000 trees on the farm. In order to learn and enjoy the trees a tree route through the farm has been designed and compiled from the gate consisting of 62 different trees.

Activities at Marulani
The Marulani Private Nature Reserve is situated in a Malaria free zone, making all outdoor activities safe for adults and children alike. The list of activities available for you to enjoy at Marulani include, but are not limited to: self-drive game drives, 4×4 (easy routes), wildlife photography, mountain biking (bring your own bike), hiking trails for walking or jogging, star gazing, fishing (catch and release) and bird watching.
